White Elephant Rules Printable
Download the free sheetA white elephant exchange gets confusing when half the room expects unlimited stealing and the other half thinks a gift is frozen after two steals. Print the rules before anyone draws a number. This free workbook contains a readable house-rule card and a second sheet of numbered slips for the draw.
Agree on one version of the game
Write the gift spending limit and player count on the card. This version starts with player one opening a wrapped gift. Later players may open a gift or steal an opened one. A player whose gift is taken chooses again, but cannot immediately take back that same gift. A gift freezes when it reaches the agreed steal limit; the editable default is two.
The game ends when every gift is open. This card does not include an extra final swap for player one. Other groups use different house rules, so read these aloud and agree on changes before you begin. Keep a simple tally beside each gift to track steals and avoid relying on everyone’s memory.
Prepare the number draw
The second sheet has numbers one through twenty-four, separated by cutting lines. Print it, cut out only as many slips as there are players, fold them and shuffle before each person draws. Remove unused slips rather than asking people to redraw a number that has no player. For a larger group, make additional clearly numbered slips before the party.
Track the host’s spending
The rule card organizes the exchange; it does not choose gifts or track costs. If you are buying the host’s contribution and several family presents, the existing $7 Christmas Gift List & Budget Tracker keeps those purchases in one budget with buying progress. Enter only the gifts you are responsible for purchasing, so the party limit is not confused with your whole holiday budget.
